The project upgrades the Terminal 2 Baggage Handling System (BHS) by replacing the outdated DeviceNet network with an EtherNet/IP‑based architecture for the Lower‑Level Controls (LLC) network. The modernization enhances key BHS components within the Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS), Checked Baggage Resolution Area (CBRA), and ticket counter subsystems, addressing the operational challenges associated with obsolete DeviceNet hardware.
Studdiford Technical Solutions, LLC (STS) performed a comprehensive retro‑commissioning assessment of the entire Terminal 2 BHS to identify deficiencies impacting throughput, energy efficiency, mechanical performance, and compliance with TSA Planning Guidelines and Design Standards (PGDS). The assessment produced actionable recommendations to improve overall system reliability and operational efficiency.
In addition to the retro‑commissioning effort, STS provides program management and oversight for the implementation of the DeviceNet Replacement. Services include monitoring contractor design and installation activities, reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs and RFVs, managing the project schedule, performing electrical static and functional commissioning, and coordinating Integrated Site Acceptance Testing (ISAT) with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Southwest Airlines, and the Port of Oakland. STS also facilitates Owner–Architect–Contractor (OAC) meetings to maintain alignment among all stakeholders and support successful project execution.
