Terminal A/B Expansion and BHS Program at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

BWI maintains its stature as Southwest Airline’s primary hub for east coast operations. Over the years, it has experienced exponential growth requiring significant expansion of its core facility and associated systems, the backbone of which is its outbound baggage handling system (BHS) and Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS). Initially installed immediately following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the initial system had to be “shoehorned” into the confines of an ongoing terminal expansion. Although later recapitalized to include the replacement of legacy Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) equipment, the CBIS continues to experience recurring saturation and failures resulting in departure delays and misconnected bags.

Project Details

As a critical member of the design team, Studdiford Technical Solutions, LLC (STS) is providing BHS design oversight, TSA coordination and commissioning services for the Terminal A/B expansion program at BWI. The project entails design and installation of a replacement CBIS, sortation to two existing and one new outbound make-up units, and improved sortation for Southwest Airlines’ operations.

The scope of services includes management of all BHS CBIS design for TSA compliance, TSA submittals preparation, coordination of tie-in to the existing upper-level controls system, coordination with the Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR), and Baggage Handling System Contractor (BHSC).
