개요

As the first step in a major DOT-A initiative to transform baggage handling at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Phase 1 of the Baggage Handling System Improvements project marks a critical leap forward. This foundational phase delivers key upgrades to the legacy outbound baggage systems in Terminals 1 and 2, setting the stage for a modern, streamlined, and more efficient baggage experience for travelers at HNL.

Existing System Challenges

The existing baggage handling systems at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport contain legacy equipment that has been in operation well beyond its serviceable life. Over the years, parts availability has decreased for some of the older legacy equipment. In some instances, parts have had to be salvaged from unused or abandoned equipment to make repairs. High repair costs and time are a result of the age of the equipment.

Improvements and Benefits

Replacing the make-ups in Lobbies 5 and 7 decreased maintenance costs and increased system availability by reducing repair times. BNP’s changes for Lobby 8 offered more efficient sortation and significantly reduced the sortation footprint, allowing room for future BHS projects. The subject segment upgraded select conveyor sortation and controls at Terminal 2 Lobbies 5, 7, and 8, and Terminal 1 Lobbies 2 and 3, including:

  • Replaced and centralized Lower-Level PLC controls for Lobbies 2 and 3 to the BHS control room
  • Replaced all three Lobby 5 outbound make-ups and adjusted the associated feeds
  • Replaced two make-ups in Lobby 7 and the associated feeds
  • Replaced the Lobby 8 sortation loops as well as existing sort piers with make-up devices in Lobby 8
  • Replaced Lobby 8 PLCs, including installation in a new rack/enclosure in the United BSO
