As the first step in a major DOT-A initiative to transform baggage handling at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Phase 1 of the Baggage Handling System Improvements project marks a critical leap forward. This foundational phase delivers key upgrades to the legacy outbound baggage systems in Terminals 1 and 2, setting the stage for a modern, streamlined, and more efficient baggage experience for travelers at HNL.
The existing baggage handling systems at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport contain legacy equipment that has been in operation well beyond its serviceable life. Over the years, parts availability has decreased for some of the older legacy equipment. In some instances, parts have had to be salvaged from unused or abandoned equipment to make repairs. High repair costs and time are a result of the age of the equipment.
Replacing the make-ups in Lobbies 5 and 7 decreased maintenance costs and increased system availability by reducing repair times. BNP’s changes for Lobby 8 offered more efficient sortation and significantly reduced the sortation footprint, allowing room for future BHS projects. The subject segment upgraded select conveyor sortation and controls at Terminal 2 Lobbies 5, 7, and 8, and Terminal 1 Lobbies 2 and 3, including:
