The Perishable Handling Center (PHC) at Muscat International Airport was developed to support the airport’s growing cargo needs, as current facilities won’t be able to keep up with future demand.
BNP provided the design and consulting services for the Material Handling System (MHS) as part of a team led by SSH Design and Engineering Consultancy, working under Oman Aviation Group (OAG).
Oman Aviation Group’s primary objective is to utilize the new PHC as part of the first phase in the development of the national air cargo strategy by providing a world-class facility for the export and import of perishable goods, including seafood, fruit, and vegetables.
Located at the new Muscat International Airport, the PHC is an extension of the existing cargo facility. The 7000 square meter cargo facility has a capacity of 150,000 tons of perishable cargo per annum, divided into two zones for export and import, as well as transshipment service.
The chambered ULD storage area can accommodate up to 75 ULDs and is designed for storing sensitive items, such as pharmaceuticals and meat, that require separate storage. The temperature-controlled bulk storage area has space for 276 positions.
The PHC handles both loose and intact cargo and includes security screening. It’s equipped with pallet storage, elevated workstations, truck docks with dock levelers, bulk racking, and cold rooms. The facility also supports ramp-side delivery and collection while maintaining proper temperature control.
