E-Commerce Facility at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD)

Ethiopian Airlines provides logistics services for international goods in Africa, Asia, and South America, as well as some domestic goods. They currently operate a cargo terminal at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which has an annual processing capacity of 600,000 tons. With the increasing development of aviation logistics, Ethiopian Airlines plans to establish its logistics hub status in Africa by constructing an E-commerce Facility and sharing the logistics pressure of the existing Cargo terminals.

BNP’s Role

BNP was retained by Ethiopian Airlines to provide a conceptual design, validate the detailed design and review of shop drawings, provide construction administrative services on-site, manage the installation, and provide testing and commissioning, as well as closeout, support during the handover of the new E-Commerce Facility. Construction of the E-Commerce facility is ongoing and is expected to be completed in early 2024.

Facility Capacity and Features

The new facility is adjacent to Cargo Terminal 2 and has an E-Commerce processing capacity of 150,000 tons annually.

• Seven airside interfaces are connected to a Unit Load Device (ULD) storage system capable of storing up to 500 ULDs.
• Dual Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs) distribute ULDs to and from eight (8) lowerable workstations, two of which are reserved for future expansion, with the capability to utilize an additional seven slave pallet positions as required.
• Dual cross-belt sorters with 20 induction units deliver parcels via 62 chutes to their respective destination.
• The facility has incorporated a manual storage solution for 600 euro pallets.
• Nine truck docks will transport goods to and from the facility at the landside interface.
