As part of the design team led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), BNP was retained to provide consulting services for the Baggage Handling System in the new Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore.
The project included the development of new landside and airside terminal facilities. The first phase added capacity for 25 million annual passengers to the airport. The second phase expanded the terminal and BHS to support a total airport capacity of 65 million passengers per year.
The full build-out features an originating system with six check-in islands and two main originating check-in lines that feed ten ECAC Standard 3 screening machines. The check-in islands include both full-service kiosks and state-of-the-art self-bag drop units. The screening process complies with the latest ECAC Standard 3, TSA, and Indian BCAS requirements.
Out-of-Gauge (OOG) baggage is transported from the departures hall to the apron level using two oversize transport subsystems, each with inline OOG screening equipment located at the apron level.
Sorting is handled by two Tilt Tray Sortation (TTS) devices that feed sixteen slope-plate make-up carousels, each 45 meters long. The system includes redundant feeds from each sorter, ensuring operational flexibility and backup between the two sortation loops.
Early Bag Storage (EBS) for 1,000 bag positions is provided by automated, lane-based, double-stacked conveyors. These are centrally located between the two sortation loops, enabling rapid dispatch of early bags to any carousel in the system.
The arrivals system includes sixteen slope-plate baggage claim devices, each 90 meters in length. Of these, four devices are dedicated to domestic flights, six to international flights, and six function as swing carousels. Each claim carousel is fed from below by two terminating input conveyors originating from the arrivals and customs screening basement. The layout is designed to minimize in-system time and speed up baggage delivery to passengers. Customs screening is integrated inline with all swing and international input belts.
