To meet future air traffic growth, the Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) is undertaking a major expansion to transform Hong Kong International Airport into a Three-Runway System (3RS). The 3RS project includes the reconfiguration of the center runway, expansion of Terminal 2 (T2), and construction of Terminal 2 Concourse (T2C). This expansion will significantly increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 120 million passengers. The new T2C provides 57 additional parking positions, and a 2.6 km long Baggage Handling System (BHS) tunnel will connect T2C with Terminal 2 on the airport island.
AAHK engaged BNP to deliver the Reference Design of the new BHS, covering all new baggage handling system and facilities, the interconnecting baggage tunnel systems, and modifications to existing baggage facilities for integration into the expanded airport-wide BHS.
The new T2C BHS handles transfer bag input and screening, departure bag sortation and make-up, as well as arrivals bag offloading. Meanwhile, the T2 BHS provides check-in, departure bag security screening and sortation terminating bags to arrival reclaim. The new BHS installed in T2 and T2C features Individual Carrier System (ICS) technology to provide the highest baggage tracking accuracy as well as high-speed transportation between terminals. In addition to linking T2 and T2C, the T2 BHS serves as a hub to interconnect with the Sky Pier baggage hall and Terminal 1 baggage hall via ICS and belt conveyor systems. Security screening for both check-in and transfer bags employs ICS in-carrier hold baggage screening (HBS), ensuring precise tracking of the security status of each bag.
To meet AAHK’s stringent resilience requirements, BNP’s design ensures that each individual BHS subsystem can handle 75% of peak baggage flow under a single failure scenario. A comprehensive real-time 3D simulation model covering Terminal 1, Terminal 2, T2C, and Sky Pier was developed and analyzed to verify that the system meets all capacity, process time, and performance requirements.
BNP’s scope of services includes reference design, simulation, design development, and preparation of tender drawings and specifications to support AAHK in procuring the BHS through a competitive tendering process. BNP is also providing site-based support staff during construction to assist AAHK in project delivery.
