United Airlines Terminal 7 and 8 at Los Angeles International Airport

Overview

BNP worked with United Airlines and Los Angeles International Airport to modernize Terminals 7 and 8 with 100% in-line baggage screening. The project upgraded ticket counter take-away conveyors, the Checked Bag Resolution Area (CBRA), and an apron-level airline bag make-up area comprising five new flat plate make-up devices. The system is in use and has been performing to PGDS version 4.1 standards since going live in June 2016.

Challenge

This LAX Terminal 7 and 8 project addressed a range of priorities, including reducing the amount of electrical installation time, increasing the modularity of the system, reducing the components in MCPs, reducing the total number of MCPs, simplifying maintenance, and lowering installation costs.

Solution

BNP was retained as part of an overall project team headed by Hensel Phelps Construction Company and Av Air Pros to design the new CBIS for 100% in-line baggage screening. The new CBIS security matrix included four CTX 9800 Level One machines, Level Two threat resolution, and Level Three ETD functions within the CBRA. The Terminal 7 baggage system included two new ticket counter take-away conveyors that collect bags from airline check-in areas, two curbside lines, clear bag transfer input, and an FIS recheck conveyor. A new apron-level airline bag make-up area comprising five new flat plate make-up devices was provided in the area where the old BHS sort piers resided. All new lower-level controls were provided as well as upper-level controls for MDS, MIS, EDS, and SAC interfaces.

Results

The new BHS was designed and built using distributed I/O, meeting all the project’s challenges head-on. The system is in use and has been performing to PGDS version 4.1 standards since going live in June 2016.
